The region

Herat in western Afghanistan

Our saffron originally comes from the Herat region in western Afghanistan, today one of the country's significant saffron-growing areas.

There, saffron is obtained from the flowers of Crocus sativus L. The delicate red stigmas are taken from the flowers by hand during the harvest and then carefully dried.

Herat and its surrounding growing areas offer varying conditions for cultivation. Scientific studies have shown that the quality markers of saffron can differ depending on the growing area.

Quality

What quality is made of

Among the things examined are crocin, picrocrocin and safranal, three quality parameters that govern the colour, taste and aroma of saffron.

Crocin stands for colour intensity, picrocrocin for taste, safranal for aroma. We select our batches on these markers and make the available analysis values accessible on request.

Harvesting in the early morning, flowers still closed

The harvest

Hand work, flower by flower

Saffron is so precious because every flower is picked by hand and every stigma removed individually. A great many flowers go into one kilogram of dried saffron. The harvest lasts only a few weeks a year and happens in the early morning, while the flowers are still closed.
